Enjoying the Holidays on the North Fork

If you’re looking for a real-life winter wonderland, look no further than the North Fork of Long Island, where white-tailed deer prance through meadows covered in snow, historic mansions hang wreaths over grand nineteenth-century facades, and residents turn their front lawns into elaborate scenes of Santa and his elves. As another holiday season approaches, here’s a guide to the best of this region’s seasonal offerings — all of which are easily accessible from The Harborfront Inn at Greenport.

Greenport Events

As a guest at Harborfront Inn, you’ll be just steps from Greenport’s best holiday events, as well as shops and restaurants that have won numerous awards. One of the events is the parade presented by the Greenport Fire Department, held on Main Street and Front Street, featuring festive costumes, family-friendly displays, and beautiful horses. A separate parade is held in Mitchell Park, bringing Christmas carols, cups of hot cocoa, and a tree lighting. The Mitchell Park parade is just a two-minute walk from Harborfront’s door.

For foodies from around the region, one of the highlights of December is Greenport Shellabration, a shellfish-themed restaurant walk throughout Greenport Village. Admission to the event, which is currently entering its eighth year, gives you $5 small plates of local shellfish paired with $3 cups of local wine and beer. Proceeds are dedicated to New York state marine and aquaculture programs. Make sure to purchase your ticket(s) well in advance, as they are known to sell out early.

Nearby Events

As soon as you leave Greenport, you’ll be faced with dozens of other amazing holiday-friendly destinations to choose from. Just a 20-minute drive west is the Hallockville Museum Farm, whose County Parlor Holiday Folk Art & Gift Show is a chance to browse unique, one-of-a-kind holiday souvenirs during two consecutive weekends in December. Baskets, home decorations, tree ornaments, handmade pottery pieces, and Santa-themed trinkets are just a few of the festive wares on offer here.
